Minutes of the Archdiocese of San Antonio Chapter, Knights of Columbus

July 16, 2003

Call to Order: The meeting was called to order by Chapter President Kenneth Martinez at 7:00 pm

Opening Prayer: Worthy Chaplain Bishop Tom Flanagan gave the opening prayer and conducted the installation of officers.

Chapter President Kenneth Martinez made some comments and encouraged us to continue our efforts. He recognized the new Grand Knights and all current Grand Knights.

After dinner, President Martinez made the following reports:

Requested that each Council designate a couple or person each month to participate in the monthly Chapter Rosary Prayer and Social, each 3^rd Tuesday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church downtown on Santa Rosa Street.

This year, as a Diocese, we exceeded our Charity goal. We recognized our Diocesan Deputy Freemon for his efforts, along with Eddie Garcia. 33 Councils made the Quick Start – we’d like to raise that to 40 this year.

Dr. Ian Thompson, Jr. is a renowned Urologist with the UT Health Science Center, has asked us to help with a long-term Cancer study. He will be our speaker at the next Chapter meeting.

We gave an average of $992 to each participant going to the World Special Olympics from the US and Mexico. We did this because we value each and every human life, in spite of whatever special needs they might have.

President Martinez recognized and thanked his Mother, two sisters and brother-in-law who were in attendance.

Chapter Vice President Bob Von Lehmden reminded us of the Knights at the Ballpark on  July 27.

These awards and recognition of achievement were made at the Texas State Convention in May.

• Brother Jerry Janecka received the State Unity Award

• Brother Greg Tatum received the State Patriotism award.

• Best Assembly Website Award 2628. SK Joe Steiner, FN and Webmaster Bill Tyler.

• Best Media award went to Council 4140 - George Terrell GK.

• DD Jim Wade for 6 monthly first degrees in a row.

• Council Reactivation Award for Council 12367, Dilley by Diocesan Deputy Freemon Sattelmaier.

• The State Service Program Award for Church Activities, second place Council 4140.

• Pro Life Ace Award was given to Wayne Pipes, GK 11596.

• Quick Start Award for all Councils in their district awarded to DD 32 Dean Murphy, DD 42 Joe Steiner, DD 28 Jim Wade.

• 5262 went over 300% for State Charities

• Ken Boone was elected to represent the Archdiocese at the KC Supreme Convention in Washington DC.

Treasurer Wayne presented flowers to Doris Schneider in thanks for editing the Alamo Messenger and chapter directory.

President Martinez made the awards:

• Knight of the Year to Brother Greg Tatum

• Family of the Year  Michael Morrison, Council 11596 and DD

GK Juan Castro was recognized as the host GK and thanked for the work. Host DD Carl Bernal was recognized.

The Next meeting will be July 16 at Council 7386, St Thomas More

Closing Prayer was said and the meeting was adjourned.

• July 26 Diocesan Organizational Meeting for Grand Knights and officers.  St John Newman Council 9291

• Mid year meeting  January 10, 2004 at Little Flower Basilica, hosted by Council 6833.

• September 12-13 the Relics of Blessed Juan Diego will be at the Basilica of the Little Flower.

• Oct 4, Tootsie Roll Drive and 4th Degree Exemplification. Assembly 2102 is host. Location is Council 4140.  Mass location TBD. To be in 4^th degree, you must be a 3^rd degree in an active council
