Minutes of the Archdiocese of San Antonio Chapter, Knights of Columbus

 August 20, 2003

Call to Order: The meeting was called to order by Chapter President Kenneth Martinez at 7:00 pm

Opening Prayer:  Assistant to the State Chaplain Deacon George Vick.

Guests.

1. Ilse Calo-oy, Community Outreach Coordinator for the Retired & Senior Volunteer Program, Senior Community Services, a Division of Catholic Charities, spoke on the program.  Anyone who enrolls with the RSVP program is automatically covered by a secondary insurance program while working as a volunteer.

2. Dr. Ian M. Thompson, Jr. Volunteers for Prostate Study.  Dr Thompson,  a nationally renowned Urologic Oncologist, spoke on the study of Prostate Cancer being sponsored by the UT Health Science Center. SABOR is the name of the project “San Antonio Center of Biomarkers of Risk for Prostate Cancer.” They are attempting to enroll 10,000 men in the project who do not have a diagnosed prostate problem for a long-term longitudinal study. A benefit is a  free annual prostate examinations. Enrollment information is available at 567-0214.

3. Mary Ester Jockers. The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Little Flower invites you to venerate the Relic of of the Tilma of Tepayac (a piece of the cloak San Juan Diego wore during the apparitions of our Blessed Mother, the Virgin of Guadalupe). The Relic will be at the Basilica from 10:30 am on Friday,  Sept through midnight and Saturday the 13th from 5 am to midnight.  We are expecting a large turnout in San Antonio, possibly 30,000 in two days.  This is the Papal Year of the Rosary, so we are encouraged to pray the Rosary during this event. We need ushers, both inside and outside the church.  An orientation will be given on Monday, Sept 8 at 7 pm in the Church for all volunteers.  Mary Ester’s phone is 521-1976. The account balance is now ($2.65), and the chapter holds a CD with a term of 180 days valued at $7000 maturing on 9/25/03.  The chapter voted to approve the treasurer’s report.

Chaplain’s Report. The Chapter Chaplain, Bishop Thomas Flanagan is in Ireland.

President’s report - Chapter President Ken Martinez. The local Catholic Television station pre-empted regular programming to show parts of the Supreme Convention and Eucharistic Congress live.

Martinez  had the pleasure of meeting the family who will be living in the next house we build. The father would like to join the Knights.

Correspondence

Chapter Committees:

1.  Habitat for Humanity and Golf Tournament - Sam Szalwinski.  We are beginning our next house on Friday, Sep 12.  The location of the work site is 514 Miracle Lane.

We are committed to six weeks of Fridays and Saturdays beginning Sep 12.  DDs and GKs, please start planning now. In our Council we are inviting our families, our Parish members, anyone. It doesn’t have to be just Knights.  

District 45 has taken responsibility for Oct 3, but we have no district committed for the Oct 17 date. We need volunteers for that date.

Next planning meeting for the Golf Tournament is Sept 8 at 7 pm Holy Spirit Church in the school library.

The date of the Golf tournament has been changed to April 12, due to a conflict with the NCAA final four game.

2.  Clergy Appreciation Dinner for 2004 will be held at St Paul’s.

3.  Website.  Secretary Mike Nishimuta reported on the new Chapter website, available at http://kc.texascomputerhelp.com. Please review the web pages, especially the list of Councils and submit any corrections to Mike at mike@nishimuta.net.  There is also a web site for the Bishop Flanagan Golf Tournament at http://sagolf.org. The userid is “john” and the password is “paul” for the private section. 

4.  We still need a Public Relations chairman. We need someone who can coordinate publicity for the Archdiocese KC activities. The Texas Knight is the State Newsletter, and we need to encourage Councils to submit news to mark.johnson@texasknight-news.net

5.  Chapter Rosary and Social. (Brother Fred Diaz, GK 7342). The monthly rosary is held on the  3rd Tuesday of each month at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church downtown. Dinner follows each Rosary.  Please appoint a representative from your Council to attend.

6.  Pro-Life: (Deacon Allan Fitzpatrick) No report.

7.  Eucharistic Convention.  Chapter President Martinez presented the idea of hosting a Eucharistic Convention in San Antonio, and asked for a vote from the Chapter on their support of the idea, which they did. He will propose the idea to the State Leadership.  If you are interested, please contact Deacon George Vick.

8.  Squires -  Freeman Sattelmaier recognized Brother Lonnie Roberts as the Archdiocese Chairman for the Columbian Squires. Lonnie asked DDs and GKs to communicate with their Squire Chief Counselors and report their names, phone numbers to Lonnie, and if they have sent in their officer’s report and audit which were due by August 20. Please have them contact Lonnie at 1701 Dawson, Apt 2, San Antonio, TX 78202 or email robertsrivet7@earthlink.net.  If you are interested in starting a Circle for boys (age 11-18), please contact Lonnie. San Fernando Cathedral’s Circle gave school supplies to over 350 children.

9.  Retreats – Chris Vasquez (Council 7265).  The annual Chapter Men’s Retreat is 26-28 September at Camp Tecaboca. The cost will be $75 before Sept 13, $80 afterwards.  Chaplain Bishop Thomas Flanagan will be the Spiritual Director, and David Trevino and Deacon Dr. Ernesto Garza, MD, will be the retreat leaders.  Retreat is open to all, not only Knights.  The Theme of the Retreat is “He Touched Me.” Please contact Deacon Garza at 492-1679 or David Trevnio at 828-0657, or email rddegza@sbcglobal.net or dtrevino1@satx.rr.com

10.  Special Olympics. No report.

Diocesan Deputy Report -  Brother Freemon Sattelmaier congratulated the Councils for making the 100% goal for Charities for the last year. Form 2630’s (Roundtable) should be faxed to Lou Barber. 

Brother Freemon Sattelmaier recognized Eddie Garcia. Eddie spoke of the Oct 4 Tootsie Roll drive, and on the Birdies for Charity program. This is a way of raising funds for State Charities by getting people to pledge and guess how many Birdies will be scored at the Valero Open on Sept 22.  Information was distributed to the District Deputies.

Chuck Monroe, Deputy Diocesan Deputy  reported on Charities and Membership.

Supreme Convention: Ken Boone reported on the Supreme Convention.  Ron Gay was elected to the Board of Directors for a 3 year term. Bishop Gregory, President of the US Council of Catholic Bishops, spoke to the Knights.  The Relic of Brother Juan Diego was on display at the convention.  Mel Gibson spoke to the delegates, and clips from the movie, “The Passion,” was shown.  The Supreme Convention will be held in Dallas in 2004.

Fourth Degree: (Master Ken Boone). The Fourth Degree will provide guard for the display of the Relic of the Tilma of Tepayac. Full regalia (no swords).   The next Vice Supreme Master will be Billy Quintanilla.

New Business

Brother Lonnie Roberts asked the Chapter to consider reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to the Texas Flag in our Council Meetings.

President Martinez showed us the sample T-shirt that will be sold at $5 each and used during Habitat for Humanity construction.  

Host District Deputy.  DD Carl Bernal was recognized and thanked.

Host Grand Knight Dean Lansing was recognized and thanked, and presided over the raffle of eight door prizes.

The sick and in distress were remembered.
